Hugh Howey, born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1975 and raised in Monroe, North Carolina. He spent the first 18 years of his life exploring different interests and attempting to write his first novel several times but, it was not until 2011 when he would start writing Wool, his first novel. In his college years in Charleston, South Carolina, Hugh Howey lived on a small sailboat to save money. After his junior year of college, he sailed South, hopping islands and survived two hurricanes. He spent the last of his cruising funds to re-step his mast and finally, it was time to return to the United States where he began his life as a yacht captain. This began a very exciting phase in his life, traveling all over the East coast, and Caribbean, from Barbados to Chicago. He worked on boats in New York, Canada, and the Bahamas. On one of these adventures, he met a women he would soon call his wife. His wife, Amber was able to lure Hugh Howey away from his vagabond and settling down in a house. These voyages allowed his mind to wander and roam greatly contributing to the stories he would soon write. Now, the self-described "bum", who for the last 20 years, has gone from job to job- computer repair, roofing, yacht captain, and bookstore clerk- is now a best-selling author in Sci-Fi starting from a self-published book written in his spare time. In the fall of 2011, Wool, the first book of the Silo series, suddenly became a huge success claiming a title of #1 Bestseller in Science Fiction on Amazon. Still writing, Hugh Howey lives in Jupiter, Florida, with his wife, Amber, and their dog, Bella.
